Xiaomi announced the new Miui 12.5 back on the 28th of December where Xiaomi showcased plenty of new features and updates that this new custom skin brings over the MIUI 12. The MIUI 12.5 brings aesthetic changes along with a few changes in privacy and new features like MIUI Notes and MIUI+.

MIUI 12.5 update

MIUI 12.5 Update Features & Improvements

MIUI 12.5 has been made to provide a better experience to the users. And for being a good UI, a constant addition and improvements in the features. The MIUI 12.5 also has improvements and the addition of new features that make this UI better than  MIUI 12.

Performance & Design Improvements

Xiaomi says that the new MIUI 12.5 is lighter, faster, and more efficient than ever before. According to Xiaomi, MIUI 12.5 uses:

  • 20% fewer cores,
  • 35% less background memory, and
  • 25% less power.

Xiaomi has also made the preinstalled apps limited to just 9 which are further uninstallable from the smartphone. We can say that the MIUI1 2.5 is pretty well optimized for the hardware and hence is expected to perform better in real-life performance.

Xiaomi says despite being an intermediate upgrade, the MIUI 12.5 is no less than a full-fledged UI upgrade. It includes dedicated threads for features, priority scheduling along improved response time. The computing power of the UI has also gone up 20 times the rendering engine than before.

 New Live Super Wallpapers

Xiaomi introduced the Super Wallpapers in the MIUI 12 and the MIUI 12.5 upgrade bring further improved versions of these live wallpapers. The MIUI 12.5’s Super Wallpapers gets new locations in the Earth version.

The first location is a snow mountain from Mount Singuniang, the highest mountain of Qionglai Mountain Chain situated in Western China. Xiaomi has captured 24 hours period of the day and night changes to match the time of the day.

The next location is Shipwreck Bay in Greece (Navagio Beach) and Blade’s Edge Mountain in Italy. Xiaomi has also said that more new wallpapers are on the way and will reach by the first half of 2021.

Haptics & System Sounds

Xiaomi has also provided a revamped experience that includes better haptic feedback behaviors and a new set of system sounds. Talking about the system notification sounds, the MIUI 12.5 has new sounds from Natural Animals from South America, Australia, East African Grassland, and Arctic Circle.

Xiaomi has captured sounds of about 120 creatures and the system sounds have been clubbed with natural elements like wood, water, sand, etc.

Coming to the haptics, MIUI 12.5 has improved vibration feedback for UI actions like the lock, gestures, taps, etc. The improved haptics is also expanded to further provide a better experience to visually impaired people. The haptics of the UI is seamlessly integrated b/w touch and force vibrations that will help the visually impaired users to get a better call to action response from their smartphone.

Apart from UI changes, MIUI 12.5 has also got improvements in segments like privacy, which is one of the main concerns for a user. In MIUI 12.5, Xiaomi has widened the scope of privacy to four new different areas. These areas include Clipboard Protection, File Storage (New Sandbox Mechanism), Browser, and Location (Fuzzy Positioning).

Fuzzy Positioning is a new feature that will allow the MIUI 12.5 user to disguise the location to a few meters away from the exact location. The clipboard protection feature keeps a log of apps and lets users know of those apps that go overboard to access the copied content on your smartphone.

The Sandbox Mechanism that has been integrated into the File Manager, enables the user to create a restricted secure environment to prevent sensitive information from slipping away into someone’s hands. Hence, this mechanism will help the user divide photos, videos, and data independently, rather than allowing apps to access all of them.

Coming to the privacy improvements that Xiaomi has embedded in the Browser (Mi Browser), MIUI 12.5 uses a security app to intercept pages in Mi Browser from blocking malicious pages from downloading themselves and stealing data.

The Xiaomi App Store from MIUI 12.5 will also have special privacy instructions involving security tempering, risks, and avoiding malicious contents.

MIUI+ & MIUI Notes

Xiaomi has upgraded the Note apps and it is now called the MIUI Notes app. With the new MIUI Notes app, users can now add quick notes and can generate chronologically structured notes as well. The app also has graffiti functions and optimizations for finger painting with 4 new brush strokes.

There are also some additional features like a typesetting system with dynamic grids and a quick shorthand window adding notes on the go.

Xiaomi has also tried providing an ecosystem-based experience and as a result of that, the MIUI+ (Beta) has been introduced in MIUI 12.5. The MIUI+ feature is the company’s first-ever cross-platform connectivity feature, currently working between PC and smartphone.

By using the MIUI+ feature, the user will be able to view mobile notifications, Open apps, view web pages from mobile, copy/paste text b/w the two devices, and open screenshots. Xiaomi has also said that the MIUI Notes and MI File Manager app will have a full PC-like interface. And with this feature user will be able to edit the documents on the go along with support for keyboard and mouse.
