Qualcomm has just launched the new Snapdragon 870 SoC and this mobile processor is filling the gap b/w the Snapdragon 865 Plus and Snapdragon 888. But if you will see closely, the specifications of the SD 870 bring nothing new but is just an overclocked Snapdragon 865 Plus that has been launched under a new name in the market.

The launch of Snapdragon 870 confirmed that the Motorola Moto Edge S will use this SoC. There are also other popular companies that are said by Qualcomm to launch their smartphones with this SoC alongside the Snapdragon 888 flagship phones. This thing is clearly pointing towards to use of the Snapdragon 870 in the smartphone like the OnePlus 9 and Redmi K40 while their respective “Pro” versions will have the Snapdragon 888.

In this comparison let’s compare the Snapdragon 870 with the Snapdragon 865 and 865 Plus in order to give you an idea about what this new Snapdragon 870 SoC has brought to the consumers.

Overclocked CPU Performance

The Snapdragon 870 is using the same Kryo 585 CPU cores distributed in a 1+3+4 manner along with the same 7nm TSMC N7P fabrication. But just like Snapdragon 865 Plus was boosted in CPU, the Prime core of the snapdragon 870 has been boosted to a whopping 3.20GHz. For comparison, the Snapdrago9n 865+ has this core clocked at 3.09GHz and 865 at 2.84GHz.

The rest of the cores are exactly the same and operates on the same frequencies. The Gold cores are at 2.42GHz and Silver cores are at 1.8GHz in the same good old manner. The Snapdragon 865 Plus brings a 10% CPU improvement over the SD 865. And a similar CPU is also expected from 865 Plus to 870.

The Snapdragon 870 CPU:

  • 1x Cortex-A76 (Kryo 585 Prime) @ 3.20GHz
  • 3x Cortex-A76 (Kryo 585 Gold) @ 2.42GHz
  • 4x Cortex-A55 (Kryo 585 Silver) @ 1.8GHz

No change in the GPU Performance

Unlike while moving from Snapdragon 865 to 865 Plus, Qualcomm overclocked the GPU, the Snapdragon 870 is using the same GPU as is already available in the SD 865 Plus. I was highly expecting the Snapdragon 870 to have a better GPU than the SD 865 Plus.

The Snapdragon 865+ got a boost of 10% in graphics performance over the SD 865. And based on that, the Snapdragon 870’s GPU performance boost could be much higher because there is a 24% highly overclocked GPU this time.

Here are the GPUs of these SoCs:

  • Snapdragon 870: Adreno 650 @ 645MHz
  • Snapdragon 865 Plus: Adreno 650 @ 645MHz
  • Snapdragon 865: Adreno 650 @ 584MHz

AnTuTu Benchmark Scores

The overclocked CPU of Snapdragon 870 makes it to score 70000 extra GPU points over AnTuTu, reaching a total of 240000 GPU scores. Hence I am expecting the SD 870 to score an overall AnTuTu score of 700000 which is really very comparable to the recently launched Exynos 1080 SoC. The Exynos 1080 scores 693600 points over AnTuTu.

Talking about the Snapdragon 865 and 865+, there is an average AnTuTu score of 610000 and 650000 points respectively. Hence, I can surely say that the Snapdragon 870 is a decent upgrade over Snapdragon 865 and 865 Plus.

The rest of the Specifications are going to be the same. This includes a Hexagon 698 DSP and 5th Gen AI Engine for AI performance of at least 15 TOPS, Spectra 480 ISP with 200MP camera support, 8k video recording and HDR compatibility, and external support for Qualcomm X55 5G modem.

Geekbench Benchmark Scores

A fresh leak about the Snapdragon 870’s Geekbench benchmark score is claiming that the Snapdragon 870 has the performance that lies between the SD 865 Plus and Snapdragon 888.

870 vs 865 vs 888

As per the leak, the Single Core score has finally touched the 1000 mark along with a decent upgrade in the Multi-Core scores as well.

Snapdragon 870 Phones

Qualcomm said that the Snapdragon 870 powered smartphone can be expected by the first quarter of 2021. It has been confirmed at the launch that the Motorola Moto Edge S is going to use this SoC plus other major smartphone makers like Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, iQOO, etc.

Since the Snapdragon 870 is not the top-end SoC hence, the non-pro versions of the smartphone series like the OnePlus 9, and Redmi K40 are my expectations.
