Samsung has finally launched its 2021’s flagship Exynos SoC which is going to power the Galaxy S21 alongside Snapdragon 888 in some regions. The chip is the company’s first flagship chip that comes with an integrated 5G modem and also the second to have the 5nm fabrication build. The Exynos 2100‘s on-paper specs are pretty promising and it can be expected that the historic performance gap b/w Snapdragon and Exynos variants of the Samsung flagships will no more be a concern for the users.
Samsung has fitted some top of the line chip hardware that also resembles what Snapdragon 888 offers in its specs sheet. Let’s have a deeper dive into the Samsung Exynos 2100.
Samsung Exynos 2100 Specifications
CPU & GPU performance
Samsung has no more used its custom Mongoose cored in the new Exynos 2100 chip and now you will see purely ARM-based CPU design. The Exynos 2100 is fabbed over Samsung’s 5nm EUV fabrication and consists of 8 cores in its CPU. The 5nm fabrication is capable of providing 10% performance enhancement (at the same power level) or 20% lower power consumption. Samsung has also included a Multi-IP governer to optimize the power consumption of the CPU, GPU, and other components of the chip.
Among these 8 cores, 1 is Cortex-X1 based with a clock speed of 2.9GHz. Joining it, there are 3 Cortex-A78 cores and 4 Cortex-A55 efficiency cores at 2.8GHz and 2.2GHz respectively. Samsung has claimed that the Exynos 2100’s CPU is 30% faster in multi-core performance than the Exynos 990.
For the GPU need, the chips have been provided with the AMR Mali-G78 MP 14 GPU which is a 14-core GPU and is based on ARM’s Valhall 2 architecture. Samsung said that the Exynos 2100 have got a 40% GPU performance boost over the Exynos 990.
Artificial Intelligence & Cameras
The Exynos 2100 consists of a 3-core AI processing Unit inside it that has been claimed by Samsung to provide up to 26 Trillion Operations Per Second (TOPS) of AI speed.
The chips also an upgraded ISP design and the chip can have up to 6 camera sensors among which 4’s incoming data can be processed simultaneously (SD 888 can process 3 at a time). Its max single-camera resolution that can be utilized is 200MP. The chip is also capable of encoding 4k @120fps and 8k at 30fps along with decoding at up to 8k @60fps.
Exynos 2100 is the company’s first flagship chip to have an integrated 5G modem. The modem supports both mmWave and Sub-6 GHz 5G connectivity with max D/L speeds of 7.35Gbps and 5.1Gbps respectively. The LTE connection can achieve up to 3Gbps in download speeds as well. These speeds are comparable to what Qualcomm’s X60 modem and x55 Modem (used in Apple A14 Bionic) offers.
